it was time for a weekend away!
for a couple that went on vacation every month for the first 6 months of dating,
not escaping the daily grind since we moved has been ... let's say "trying"...
-- so we decided to take a different type of vacation --
usually we stay in some lovely hotel downtown with many visits to speakeasies and italian restaurants
(well, as long as we're not spending all of our time at punk shows and dive bars....)
so instead, we took a trip to a place where almost all of our favorite authors spent some of the best times of their lives and wrote nothing but glowing stories of how intense and glorious the scenes are at Big Sur.
we drove down the beautiful california coast at 8pm, arriving in big sur at midnight with very little incident
although, the only incident was quite x files - which made me
a) happy in the i-love-the-xfiles way
b) freaked the fuck out because what the hell is happening!!??
we were driving calmly through the countryside at around 11pm
hills on either side, golden grass blowing in the ocean breeze
the comet floating along like a hummingbird
and then everything goes black
jim presses the breaks to a crawl but the headlights have already come back on
"what just happened?!?!"
"no idea."
"that was fucking crazy."
for about 2 full seconds, our headlights went out.
but happily, that was the end of all bad luck and craziness!
we slept in the car for the first night
(eternally thankful for bench seats)

| sleepy boy in the back seat |

| morning leg room in the comet |

it's a *little* steamy in here - but we weren't the only folks sleeping in this parking lot
we woke up early and drove to andrew molera state park (where we stopped momentarily the night before, but the sign said come back at 10am) so we showed up at 9
a short hike in to the campsites revealed many open sites! yay! we set up the tent and stored our food in the provided box,
which happened to be the upper level of this cute guy's home: |
his/her name is charlie.
favorite food: peach pits
charlie retrieving a peach pit from the fireplace -- so cute
it was a particularly lovely 85° day and so we took the ocean trail down to the beach!
jim surprised me reservations for horseback riding through trails and onto the beach!
so HAPPY!
we woke up early and went to the pens where the horses were held.
omg omg omg
happy happy happy
we rode through a river!
miss penny had a bit of a bitchface. but i loved her for it...
we did some more hiking, and ended up at a beautiful cafe on the ocean drinking mimosas!
it was absolutely fantastic!!!
